One Volunteer's Experience

"When I came to Hour Children, it is the first time that I saw people unconditionally caring for others. And I thought to myself: it is actually possible! It is the first time that I encountered such love. It made me think that there is more to life than financial and professional success. It changed the way I viewed my relationships to others. I told Sister Tesa, 'You will not be able to get rid of me.' I have been volunteering with Hour Children ever since."

Volunteer

Hour Children has been a magnet for a deeply committed and diverse volunteer corps and is grateful for their love and support. More than 120 volunteers provide core services to the organization, both in prison and in the community, enabling Hour Children to limit full-time staff to about 25.

We need volunteers to provide a variety of supportive services, including, but not limited to:

MENTORING a child, ages 7 – 17, who has a parent in prison

ASSISTING in our daycare center

WORKING in our thrift shops

TUTORING children or adults

ASSISTING with office work, particularly during mailings

PROVIDING legal assistance

COUNSELING and CONNECTING employment trainees to employment

DRIVING families/children to visit moms in NY State prisons in Westchester County

Volunteers are pivotal to all of our programs. Special aspects of our volunteer programs include:

  • High School Service Program – high school students assist caregivers in HELP (Hour Early Learning Program).

  • Community Service Program – provides federal offenders with an alternative to incarceration and/or community-based work sites.

To volunteer, please click here for an application and fax it to Linda Manzione at 718-433-4728.
